VCSEL Transceiver Market Is Poised to Recover in 2003
San Mateo, Calif. - The Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) market, which declined last year, is poised for a major recover in 2003, according to a study by industry analysts ElectroniCast.
The researchers say the market has begun to show some signs of recovery and will slowly expand next year. Unit volumes should increase from 16,300 this year to 111,000 by next year.
The market grew from $245 million in 1999 to $388 million by 2000. Last year, the market dipped to $290 million, as a result of the downturn in datacom and telecom equipment shipments.
Long wavelength VCSELs, operating at 1300 nm and 1550 nm, are now in their pre-production phase, according to ElectroniCast. [electronicast.com]

Uniphase Introduces Smaller SOAs for Use in Fiberoptics
Ottawa, Canada - JDS Uniphase Corp. has announced a new, smaller semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) module, the CQF 874, for fiberoptic communications.
The MSA-compliant device is produced with semiconductor technology, which - according to JDS - enables it to be smaller and less expensive than other types of optical amplifiers. The CQF is the first polarization-independent SOA to include integrated optical isolators, which further reduce size and cost. [jdsu.com]
